So, you’ve heard people talk about “hybrids.” But what exactly is a hybrid bike and why do you want one? Read more in this article.
A hybrid bike is one that combines the best features of road and mountain bikes, it is durable, comfortable and fast, ideal for riding on the streets and bike paths.
Features of hybrid bikes:
More upright seating, comfortable riding position.
Use of a shock-absorbing fork that absorbs potholes.
Wide enough tires for better traction and riding stability.
Lightweight alloy frame for a fast ride.
Lightweight components and plenty of speed.
The wheels on a hybrid bike are a true combination of what you would find on road and mountain bikes. Wide enough like a mountain bike for more stability and durability, but with more recommended air pressure that puts them on the same level as a road bike. The high air pressure in the tube allows you to go faster by reducing rolling resistance.
The rims and spokes on a hybrid are lighter, the same as a road bike, since you’re not expected to do serious off-road riding like you would on a mountain bike.
Hybrid frame.
Most hybrid bike frames are made of lightweight aluminum or steel (also called “chrome-moly”), strong and durable materials, with a (relatively) low price tag.
Handlebar and fit
The handlebar on a hybrid bike is usually flat, like on mountain bikes, and comes straight out of the stem. With a wider handlebar, usually at shoulder width, it allows the rider to sit upright and offers a better position to see the road and control the bike than the handlebars on a road bike.
Like a mountain bike, the hybrid’s design allows riders to sit upright, which gives them better control of the bike with good center of gravity capabilities and in a posture that reduces strain on the neck.
Transmission
Gears: Hybrids have a wide range of gears to allow the cyclist to climb hills and go fast on descents.
Typically, a hybrid bike will have two or three front sprockets. You will find eight or nine gears per rear wheel in the cassette, totaling up to 16 to 27 possible gear combinations to suit almost every stretch of road.
Pedals: Classic hybrid bikes have a platform pedal. More advanced riders prefer to use contact pedals with special shoes to provide a more professional ride. But here you need to consider frequent stops when riding on uneven terrain and this type of pedals can cause some discomfort.
Hybrid Accessories
For hybrid bikes include a bike computer, pump, tool bag, water bottle and spare tube. That’s about all you need to have with you when riding in the city.
The best known manufacturers of hybrid bikes are Cannondale, Specialized, and Trek.
Tips when buying a hybrid bike
A hybrid bike is a good choice for city riding. The key to buying a good bike is to find decent components. The moving parts are what will determine how well your bike will function and for how long.
Also, if you’re going to use your hybrid bike for commuting, look out for accessories that can make your ride easier and more comfortable, such as headlights, a rack and lock, these can come right out of the box with many models.
